Mid Range Capacity Corner Aquariums Compared

Corner Aquarium Comparison Table
The Aqua One Eurostyle 85

The  Aqua One Eurostyle 85 is in the lower capacity range of our featured aquariums with a volume of 150 litres. You'll find it available in either a beech or black finish and it comes supplied with a heater and an Aqua One Advance 750 filter which is stored in the cabinet below the tank.

Its dimensions are slightly less than comparable models which make it ideal where space is more limited while it retains a useful 150 litre capacity. We like the external filter and the more compact dimensions.

The Aqua One Windsor 66

The Aqua One Windsor 66 is a slight step up in volume from Aqua One's
Eurostyle 85 with a capacity of 180 litres. Again it's supplied with a heater and external filter, this time the filter is the Aqua One Advance 1050 - a slightly more powerful model to take account if the greater volume to be handled.

It's available in a beech finish and, as with the Eurostyle, we like the external filter which sits neatly in the aquarium cabinet.

The Aquatlantis Ambience 100

The Aquatlantis Ambience 100 sits near the top of the range with a
capacity of 190 litres. It's a well constructed model finished in a choice of birch, dark wood or black and comes supplied with a suitable 200 watt heater and the Aquatlantis Biobox 2 internal filter.

We're not so keen on the internal filter but we do like the overall design and choice of finish.

The Aquatlantis Evasion 100

The Aquatlantis Evasion 100 corner aquarium is very similar to the Ambience 100, differing mainly in price and the attractive maple finish. The aquarium is not supplied with either heating or filtration leaving you to choose your own 200 watt heater and your preference of filter - at additional cost.

We can't see any particular advantage over the Ambience but the striking finish might just swing it.

The AquaVital Vogue 60

Marketed as a budget model, the Aquavital Vogue 60 comes with a
capacity of 180 litres and integral T8 lighting. The fact that you need to buy a separate heater and suitable filter adds to the cost and it's debatable whether the tank can truly be said to be a "budget" model. It does mean however that you can choose filtration according to your own preference.

Lighting is by the less efficient T8 system but should still give reasonably adequate performance. The tank does have its own particular character and this may well appeal.

The AquaVital Vogue 60 is available in a beech finish only as illustrated

The Eheim Scubacorner 200

The Eheim Scubacorner 200 is the only corner aquarium to feature flat front panels and this in itself makes it stand out from the rest. The capacity is a substantial 200 litres and the tank comes with a choice of external filters and heating systems.

The tank itself is finished in black trim and is available with either a damson-heartwood or black-anthracite cabinet. We like the external filter selection and the flat panels and think this one with its attractive choice of finishes is well worth a second look.

The Ferplast Dubai 90

The Ferplast Dubai 90 is a 180 litre capacity model available in beech, black or walnut finishes.

Heating is by way of a Ferplast Bluclima 150 watt heater which is borderline wattage for this size of tank. If you live in a cold area or the tank is to be placed in a cold room we would recommend keeping an eye on the temperature and upgrading to a 200 watt model if the heater seems to be struggling. Filtration is supplied by the Ferplast Bluwave internal system.

We like the finishes and overall look of the tank but we're not too keen on the 150 watt heater or the internal filter. Just a matter of personal taste of course.

The Fluval Venezia 190

The Fluval Venezia 190 is a popular 190 litre corner aquarium which comes in a light oak finish featuring reversible doors which are wenge, or dark wood, on the rear.

It's supplied with a 200 watt heater and the Fluval 205 External Filter. The tank is pre-drilled to accomodate the filter pipes but the holes can be sealed if an alternative method of filtration is preferred. You'll find more information and a link to the user manual in our Fluval Venezia 190 feature. We like the external filter and the reversible doors.

The Juwel Trigon 190

The Juwel Trigon 190 is one of the most widely available corner aquariums in this range. You'll find it in four finishes; beech, black, dark wood and white with a matching cabinet. The capacity is 190 litres and the tank comes supplied with a 200 watt heater and the Juwel Bioflow 3 internal filter.

We think this is an attractive tank and the range of finishes means you'll probably find a style to suit your taste. Predictably we're not fans of the internal filter although the Juwel Bioflow 3 does come with a good reputation.

So What's Out There?

If you're looking for a middle of the range capacity corner aquarium, by which we mean in the region of 150 to 200 litres you are, quite frankly, spoiled for choice. In this category there are no less than nine models from seven different manufacturers available online in the UK - although many of these are not now widely available.

Probably the easiest to find is the popular Juwel Trigon 190 followed closely by its competitor the Fluval Venezia 190, but some of the others are also worthy of consideration.

Finishes

If you're choosing your corner aquarium as a decorative feature, and most do, the main factor in your decision may well be the finishes available for each model. The majority of corner aquariums currently on sale offer more than one finish and these vary from model to model. In general terms however you will be able to find aquariums finished in black, white, light wood and dark wood and there should be something to suit your preference. It's not always a good idea to get too hung up on the aquarium finish or colour though. In the end of course it's not the colour or finish of the aquarium that will be the talking point but the inhabitants and aquascape it contains.

Stands and Cabinets

Often cabinets and stands are sold separately from the corner aquarium itself and it is possible to purchase the tank alone. We would however caution against buying a corner aquarium without the purpose built stand which goes with it. The weight of a tank when filled with water, equipment, gravel and decoration is considerable and the matching stand will have been designed and constructed to the precise specification of the aquarium in question taking account of issues of weight and balance. Unless you are well qualified to do so, constructing your own stand, or purchasing a stand or cabinet designed for a different aquarium is potentially to invite disaster.

Design

All the corner aquariums featured in the guide are quality built and each comes with its own cabinet either supplied or available to purchase separately. Most are bow fronted although the Eheim Scubacorner 200 offers a unique flat panel front. Some fish keepers feel a bow fronted aquarium can offer a distorted view of the fish within although we would have to say we have never found this an issue of any great significance. If you have concerns in this regard however the Scubacorner would put them at ease.

Other that the flat panel Eheim all the corner aquariums available are of the same overall shape although dimensions, capacities and design differ slightly from model to model. You may have a personal preference for a deeper tank or the dimensions of your room may dictate a certain size - the choice is yours and should be catered for in the selection on offer. All will have sufficient capacity for either marine or freshwater fish - essentially you are looking for something in excess of 100 litres for keeping marine tropical fish. It is possible to use a smaller tank but there can be issues in maintaining the balance of minerals in the water - in general the larger capacity you can accomodate or afford the better.

Volumes, Heating and Filtration

The capacities of the aquariums featured vary from 150 to 200 litres although it should be remembered that this is only indicative. Effectively the capacity will be reduced by the addition of gravel and stone and decorative work, aquarium plants and heating and filtration equipment. Decor is a matter of personal or fish preference but gravel, filtration and heating are essentials. Generally a heater will not take up too much space and there's really no practical alternative to the traditional aquarium heater with an integrated thermostat - a 200 watt model will be sufficient for up to 200 litres. There are options when it comes to filtration however, particularly between internal and external filtration.

As the terms suggest, an internal filter is contained within the tank itself while an external filter will be contained outside, usually in the cabinet on which the tank is mounted although there are models which hang on the rear of the tank - not particularly practical for a corner aquarium. Most but not all of the corner aquariums featured here will come supplied with either an internal or external filter. Our prefererence is for an external model, mainly due to the tank space which is inevitably taken up by an internal filter and the fact that in general an external filter is more convenient to access for cleaning and maintenance.

If you would prefer an external filter there's no reason to avoid a tank just because it's supplied with an internal one. Some very good corner aquariums are supplied with internal filters and you can always switch to an external filter either at the outset or at a later stage although there is of course a cost implication to consider.

Lighting

A quick word about lighting. All the corner aquariums covered in this review are fitted with T5 or T8 lighting. Here the T simply stands for tubular while the number gives the diameter of the tube in eighths of an inch (an eighth of an inch is approximately 3mm).

In general T5 lighting is more efficient than T8 in that a T5 tube will provide more light than a T8 tube of a similar length. All other things being equal, a corner aquarium served by a T5 lighting system is likely to be brigher than one lit by T8s. and while this can have advantages in relation to viewing and plant growth too much light is not necessarily a good thing. The length of time the lighting in your corner aquarium is left on each day should be monitored in relation to plant and algae growth and may need to be regulated seasonally depending on how much natural light the tank is exposed to.
